Halcon is an extraordinary, rocky site at 2500 ft in the Yorkville Highlands. High elevation, cold coastal breezes, extreme low vigor soils and dense plantings converge to grow a enigmatic style of Syrah mostly unknown in California - Fine-boned and ethereal, but nonetheless incredibly complex
Made in the same way Jolie-Laide produces all their wines - that is; whole cluster, foot-trodden grapes, fermented with native yeasts and aged in neutral oak. Minimal inputs to highlight the phenomenal terroir. Wondering about the name? Jolie-Laide translates loosely to 'Pretty-Ugly' - a French term of endearment to describe something that is unconventionally beautiful. In the case of this wine, i would probably drop the 'unconventional' prefix and just call it 'drop-dead gorgeous'
